A well structured board will have individuals with a broad range of expertise and experience. The board should set the strategic direction for the club and have financial plans that enable the delivery of the strategy. As well as acting as custodians for the assets of the members, they can set the tone for many of the important relationships a club has; including most significantly with the members who own it.
A lot can be expected from a club board director, with the vast majority of people performing the role on a voluntary basis and juggling full time jobs and family life.
Supporters Direct has produced a Club board member guidance booklet for community-owned sports clubs through its Club Development arm. It focuses on the importance of the role and duties of a club board director.
This literature supports SD’s policy and overarching aim to develop sustainable, successful clubs that are owned by, and embedded in, their community. You can read the guide here.
