Six memorable Old Firm matches

Old Firm

So just under three years on, it’s here again. Celtic v Rangers once again, this time in a League Cup semi-final. The last time that the two Glasgow clubs met was April 29th 2012, when Celtic comfortably saw off their cross-city rivals 3-0 at Celtic Park. Since then, the two clubs have avoided one another, with Rangers beginning life in the lowest tier of Scottish league football and the cup competitions refusing to throw them together until now.

Hostilities will be renewed early next year at Hampden Park, with a place in the League Cup Final at stake. In a bid to get this out of the way as soon as possible and forgo three months of unbearable build-up, Scottish Fans has picked six memorable Old Firm matches to look back on.

Celtic 7-1 Rangers – 1957, Scottish Cup Final

A match that will forever be seared into the memories of the Celtic support, less so their blue rivals. This represents the biggest winning margin between the two teams in any of the cup finals in which they have met.

Celtic 0-3 Rangers – 1999, SPL

Hugh Dallas. Coin. Blood. Penalty.

 Rangers 0-2 Celtic – 2011, SPL

Two goals from Giorgios Samaras sealed the win for Celtic at Ibrox, though it would be Rangers who would claim the league title come May by just a single point.

Rangers 3-2 Celtic – 2002, Scottish Cup Final

A last minute Peter Lovenkrands header won the Cup for Rangers in the final minutes of a captivating match.

Celtic 6-2 Rangers – 2000, SPL

The first in a pair of matches between the two in the 2000/2001 season that saw big home wins. Celtic put their rivals to the sword at Celtic Park – capped off by a famous goal from Henrik Larsson. Martin O’Neill’s men would go on to lift the SPL title in the spring of 2001.

Rangers 5-1 Celtic – 2000, SPL

Rangers would get their revenge only a matter of months later. Henrik Larsson cancelled out Barry Ferguson’s opening goal before debutant Tore Andre Flo restored the Ibrox club’s lead. Alan Thompson was then sent off and Rangers cruised to a memorable victory.
